100% Traceable Alberta Wool
Our yarn begins with fleeces purchased directly from family-run farms in Alberta. By working with heritage and specialty breeds, we produce a yarn with the right balance of strength, softness, drape, and durability for weaving blankets.
The wool is carefully sorted and graded by hand before being spun at Custom Woolen Mills, thereby keeping the entire process local, transparent, and traceable from farm to cone and skein.
Natural fleece shades range from cream through grey to deep brown/black, and select batches are dyed with locally grown or foraged plants, producing colours that are unique to our prairie landscape.

Why this Yarn Works for Weavers
- It is a yarn specially designed for weaving blankets
- Cones are often preferred by weavers because they hold more yarn and are easier to manage for warping.
Why this Yarn works for Knitters
- This woolen spun yarn can be used for warm projects such as mittens or scarves.
- Mule spun yarn (Custom Woolen Mills is one of the few mills in North America that has this equipment) most closely resembles hand spun yarn
- Dyed skeins are in 100 yard lengths allowing more colour options
Yarn Specifications
- 880 yards per pound
- 110 yards in a 2 ounce skein
- 2 ply woolen spun
- Recommended sett is 8 EPI for twill, but can work at10 EPI
- For knitters, it would be considered a “medium” or “worsted” weight wool
- Please note that the naturally dyed wools will have bloomed from the dye process.
- This would not be the case with the natural coloured Parkland wool.
- This yarn has been blended for colour and characteristic. We strive to ensure that when you are weaving with different natural colours, there will be negligible shrink differentiation. However, the dyed wool will have bloomed from the dye process. Care should be taken if using blocks of coloured yarns in the warp or weft.
- Please note that natural dyes are wash-fast but not light-fast. Direct sun will cause a patina effect, which some people may or may not desire.
- Snow - Warm undertones
- Lichen - Light Grey + warm undertones
- Driftwood - Pale Grey + cool undertones
- Granite - Medium Grey + cool undertones - out of stock
- Storm Cloud - Heathered Dark Grey (cooler undertone)
- Charcoal - Our darkest black with brown undertones
