Spinning Llama and Alpaca Fibre

Saturday, November 7th, 21st, December 5th (1pm to 4pm)

Known for their soft, luxurious fibre, these two species of camelids are prized by spinners. This class will look into the history and types of llamas and alpacas and the characteristics of their fibre. Working from commercial top, washed locks, and raw fibre, students will prepare and spin samples using multiple techniques to find how they prefer to create their yarn.

This course is designed for spinning wheels but may be done on spindles if the student contacts us before the class to discuss. If you do not have your own wheel, please reach out to rent one of our wheels (subject to availability). There will not be homework assigned for this class, although it is recommended that students finish samples that were not completed during class and continue to practice what was learnt.

Each student will be provided with a workbook and approximately 250g of wool for use in class and at home practice. The fibre provided for this class includes 50g of each llama, alpaca, and baby alpaca commercial top, along with washed llama fibre and raw alpaca. We are happy to order twice the amount of commercial top for those who wish to have more to play with. These are at cost and is the "extra fibre" option below. Raw fibre cannot be doubled; however we are happy to provide contact information for the local suppliers that we get the fibre from.

Equipment to be Supplied by Students:

• Spinning wheel with at least 3 bobbins and general supplies for it (orifice hook, wheel oil, extra drive band, etc.)
• Hand carders (preferably general purpose / 72 PPSI)
• Flick carder or dog slicker brush
• Lazy Kate

Prerequisites: Students must be able to use a spinning wheel to spin singles and ply them.

At Traceable Textiles, our goal is to make fibre arts accessible and enjoyable for everybody. As most of our classes involve detailed verbal instructions and the use of the student’s hands and feet, please contact us if you may need adaptations to conventional methods. This forewarning allows the instructor time to prepare any techniques or tools that will help you succeed in the class.

All workshop and studio drop in registrations are non-refundable. Each event requires significant time and preparation, including pre-arranged materials to ensure the best possible experience for participants.

Workshop and Drop in spots are transferable. If you have any questions, please contact us directly.

In the event of a cancellation due to low enrolment or unforeseen restrictions, we will provide alternative options for registered participants.

Only students are allowed in the studio during classes.
