Dyeing with Indigo – 2-Part Workshop
Dyeing with Indigo – 2-Part Workshop
Dyeing with Indigo – Hands-On 2-Part Workshop
Indigo is one of the most revered natural dyes, but also one of the most misunderstood. Unlike most plant-based dyes, indigo works through a unique oxidation process, which can seem intimidating at first. In this two-part workshop, we’ll guide you through the fundamentals so you can dye with confidence.
What to Expect:
Session One – Preparation - November 8th, 1:00–2:30 PM
We’ll begin by scouring our locally spun Parkland yarn and building our indigo vat. During this session, you'll also learn about the indigo plant, its historical significance, and the chemistry behind the dyeing process.
Session Two – Dyeing - November 15th, 1:00–4:00 PM
In the second session, we’ll dye our yarn in the prepared indigo vat. You’ll learn techniques for even and layered colour application, and how to care for your fibre as the colour oxidizes and sets.
What's Included:
- 8oz / 200g of indigo-dyed Parkland yarn
- All materials required to scour, dye, and finish your yarn
- Instructional handouts for at-home finishing
- Option to purchase additional yarn (subject to availability)
- Students may bring small additional items to dye, pending discussion with the instructor. Items must be appropriate for a protein-fibre optimized vat (ideal for wool, alpaca, and silk; not suitable for cotton, linen, or synthetic fibres).
Limited to 4 students per class.
No prior dyeing experience required.
Price: $295/person
