Natural Dyeing Workshop – Forage & Dye Your Own Yarn
Natural Dyeing Workshop – Forage & Dye Your Own Yarn
Discover the magic of natural dyeing from flower to fibre.
Join us for an unforgettable hands-on workshop where students will begin the day foraging for dye plants and end with beautifully hand-dyed yarn using these natural materials.
We will start our day in Edmonton’s scenic river valley, gathering our dye plants tansy or coreopsis, depending on the chosen option, then head to our studio to mordant and dye our locally spun Parkland wool yarn.
This two day class combines practical experience with in-depth discussions about natural dye theory and plant-based dye techniques. On Saturday, we will forage our flowers, mordant the yarn, and start the dye bath. Sunday's class will be when we finish the bath, then dye and finish the yarn.
What’s Included:
- 8oz / 200g of plant-dyed Parkland yarn (additional yarn available for purchase, subject to availability)
- Guided foraging session (optional)
- Instruction in mordanting and dyeing wool with natural dyes
Class Options:
Tansy Workshop – yields warm yellows and sage green tones
Coreopsis Workshop – produces vibrant oranges, reds, and bronze hues
Important Notes:
The foraging portion of the tansy workshop is physically active and involves climbing up and down steep steps in the river valley. Sturdy footwear and a reasonable fitness level are required.
The coreopsis workshop includes foraging with no elevation changes and is more accessible for those with mobility concerns.
You are always welcome to opt out of the foraging and meet us directly at the studio for the dyeing portion. Please contact us to let us know that this is your preferred option.
Colour obtained may vary from the images due to the nature of process.
Students must provide their own transportation between locations.
