3 Projects, 3 Weekends: Gaining Confidence in Loom Setup
3 Projects, 3 Weekends: Gaining Confidence in Loom Setup
The most daunting part of weaving is often getting the loom dressed and ready to go. This intensive, short-term course is designed to tackle that fear head-on. By completing three distinct projects over three weekends, you will gain the hands-on practice and repetition necessary to confidently set up your loom at home, allowing you to move from preparation to weaving with ease and excitement.
Project 1: Mug Mats (Rug Weaving Styles)
The first project focuses on the basics of dressing a loom quickly. We will set up for plain weave mug rugs, concentrating on the entire process from winding the warp to tying on and weaving a header to set the baseline for a successful project.
Project 2: Table Runner (Huck Lace)
This session introduces weavers to huck lace. The focus will be on efficiently taking off the previous warp and dressing the loom again for the lace pattern.
Project 3: Tea Towel (Overshot Border)
This project introduces overshot by incorporating it as a decorative border. This class will solidify your warping, threading, and tie-up skills while demonstrating how to quickly adapt your loom for different patterns.
Class Schedule - Choose Your Own Dates!
This course is offered over a 3-week period, with a Saturday afternoon and a Monday evening date for each project. Students choose one session for each of the three projects to complete the course. It will be first come, first serve, so if you are available only certain days/times, register early. Please note date changes are only possible if seats remain available.

This course is designed specifically for 4-shaft table looms. Students must bring their own table loom. If you do not have a loom, we suggest looking into rental options available through the Edmonton Weavers' Guild (membership required). This is a hands-on class, with no formal homework required, but if students do not complete the project during class time, they will need to finish them at home.
All necessary warp and weft yarns for the three projects will be provided by the instructor, along with an instruction key. A warping mill or warping board will be provided for use in class.
Equipment to be Supplied by Students (for Class):
- 4-shaft table loom
- Raddle and lease sticks
- Paper or sticks for beaming
- Two shuttles and at least 2 bobbins, threading/sleying hook, measuring tape and scissors
Note: If you do not have a bobbin winder at home, bring extra bobbins to wind on your yarn at the studio.
Prerequisites: Students must have some experience weaving, dressing a loom and knowledge of weaving terminology.
